TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR CAREER BY TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE
Monday, February 15, 2016, by Chuck Garcia, comments 0

Thanks for the numerous comments of my most recent post on Emotional Intelligence. The concept struck a chord and provided food for thought.

In my continuing quest to coach clients and students to new heights, a key factor to unlock and maximize your EQ is rooted in self-awareness. One of your questions that surfaced, "Are there other books you recommend to help guide me on a path to self-reflection, and ultimately, self-awareness?"

To initialize that journey before you dive into Emotional Intelligence 2. 0., I recommend  THE CHARGE: ACTIVATING 10 HUMAN DRIVES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL ALIVE by Brendan Burchard. It's  “an unapologetic assault on boredom, distraction, and mediocrity.” Challenging you to live a more “vibrant, strategic, and engaged life,” it’s a call to action to demand more of yourself and tap into a stronger internal charge that lives within all of us.

In this age of abundance, choice, and connectivity, why are we feeling lacking and detached? What made us happy, energized and fulfilled fifty years ago no longer applies. He asserts that the way in which we activate and feel satisfied by society’s needs has changed. How we express and meet our human drives are not the same. It’s time to change in response to this societal shift. Burchard argues that the only way to "measurably improve the quality of your life is learn to activate the ten drives that make you human."  He divides those into five baseline and five forward drives:

Before explaining the drives that live within all of us, he poses a thought provoking inquiry. "Are you living a “caged, comfortable, or charged life?” He distinguishes those three life modes by begging questions worthy of self-examination:

  1. “The one living a caged life asks, Will I survive?”
  2. “The one living a comfortable life asks, Will I be accepted and succeed?”
  3. “The one living a charged life asks, “Am I living an inspired life and inspiring others?”

Burchard communicates that it helps to know “just what kind of life you’re in, and the type of person you are that led you to that life.” With that in mind, the book is an exploration of what drives us as human beings and how we can help ourselves and others drive to the kind of life that helps us to exceed our own expectations.

It begins with mindset and follows with action. Before you plunge into an assessment of your EQ, start with an inspiring guide to harness that emotional internal change that lives with you. THE CHARGE is a thoughtful, compelling, and actionable investment in your future.
